ABOUT THE EP
The "No Longer, Not Yet" EP is a hyper-experimental, avant-garde electronic EP. Created by world class composer Jackson Northen, the EP features a deep and detailed world designed to transport listeners into "liminal spaces"
So what are liminal spaces?
A liminal space was a term originally coined after a viral 4chan post from 2019, describing a fiction world that one can enter called "The Backrooms". The photo which accompanied the post was one of an empty office building with yellow walls, old carpet and fluorescent lighting. The image was shown to have a profound effect on people born from the mid 1990s into the late 2000s, a unique generation of people who grew up while the world was changing from a physical one to a digital. Since then, hundreds of thousands of "liminal" photos have been found and shared online, each giving viewers in the correct age gap a feeling like no other.
The word liminal was not invented for this concept however, the word has been around since Roman times. The original definition is "occupying at or on both sides of a boundary or threshold" or also "relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process." The word was appropriated to these photos because they often feature transitional places, ones where things are abandoned, in the middle of remodeling or just empty. It also applies to the people in the age range, with most photos being taken sometime from 2000-2010, a time when the age gap for liminal spaces were growing up. This accounts for the nostalgic and forlorn feeling people in the correct age gap feel when viewing the images.
Liminal spaces are a profound phenomena that we know very little about, but will prove to be vital to the aesthetics of the 21st century, as Generation Z prepares to shape the world.
How do these feelings get transferred into music?
Composer Jackson Northen was perfect for the project, being a young and talented composer/producer and being born in 2002. He understands the liminal like few do, and has dedicated thousands of hours studying the philosophy and innerworkings of liminal spaces.
Liminal music has been tried before. Most examples are ambient in nature and lo-fi. So, that's where he began. Northen of course, took it a step further. Within the EP you will find deep detailed worlds, with unique sound design and incredible sound stage. It's immersive, intense and passionate. Faded and distorted home-video audio is baked into ambient drones, wide spaces are used to make the listener feel isolated, and a hyper-precise stereo field bring the listener in, and draws out feelings that liminal photos do.
